Therapy is a big step.
It helps to know what to expect.

Starting counseling can feel intimidating. I’m here to help you know what to expect and how to prepare for this important step. While individual counseling looks different for each client, below you’ll find some methods and guidelines that will help you prepare.

  • Person-Centered Therapy

Person-Centered Therapy is a supportive, nonjudgmental approach that gives you space to explore your thoughts and emotions at your own pace. Originally developed by Carl Rogers, this approach is grounded in empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard, with the belief that growth and healing happen when you feel safe, heard, and understood.

  • Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a goal-oriented approach that helps you focus on strengths, practical solutions, and meaningful progress. Originally developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, this approach encourages you to build on what is already working and take small, intentional steps toward positive change.

  • Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care recognizes the impact trauma can have on emotional, relational, and nervous system functioning. This approach emphasizes emotional safety, trust, and compassion while helping you build resilience, increase self-awareness, and develop healthy coping skills in a supportive environment.

  • Animal-Assisted Support

Animal-assisted supportive techniques incorporate animals to help you feel more comfortable, connected, and at ease during the therapeutic process. These techniques can support emotional regulation, reduce anxiety, and create a calming, supportive environment for growth and healing.

  • Play-Based Therapeutic Methods

Play-based therapeutic methods use developmentally appropriate play, creativity, and interactive activities to help children express emotions, process experiences, strengthen communication, and build coping skills. This approach creates a safe and engaging environment where children can explore thoughts and feelings in ways that feel natural and comfortable to them.
